Set amongst the ancient Caledonian pine forests alongside the River Spey, Spey Valley Golf Club is widely recognised as one of the UK's most picturesque golf courses. Designed by Dave Thomas, the 18-hole championship course is home to Scotland's longest hole- a formidable 635-yard par five-and presents unique maintenance challenges due to its location in the Scottish Highlands.

Head Greenkeeper David Beardwood has led the maintenance team since joining the club in 2014. With a wealth of experience gained at Kingsbarns Golf Links, Secret Valley Golf Club in Cyprus and the Old Course at St Andrews, David has built a strong reputation within the turf industry for his sustainable and practical approach to course maintenance.

"I started my career in construction before moving into greenkeeping at Kingsbarns Golf Links for six years. I then worked at Secret Valley Golf Club in Cyprus for six years before returning to Scotland to work on the Old Course at St Andrews. I accepted the Head Greenkeeper role at Spey Valley in 2014."

Working Smarter in the Scottish Highlands

Situated approximately 400 feet above sea level, Spey Valley experiences a shorter growing season than many golf courses across the UK. This limits the available maintenance window, making reliable equipment and efficient workshop practices essential.

The club also maintains a separate nine-hole beginners' course, all cared for by David's relatively small team.

A Hunter Grinder That Has Stood the Test of Time

The club's Hunter Jupiter Series 5 grinder has been in service since the course opened in 2006 and continues to deliver dependable performance.

"The club already owned Hunter Grinders when I arrived. Our previous mechanic was trained on Hunter Grinders equipment and found them extremely reliable. I had also seen Hunter grinders used while working in construction in Turkey, which gave me confidence in the brand."

More than two decades later, the machine remains a valuable part of the workshop.

"Based on our own experience, we can't really fault it. The grinder has been in use since the course opened in 2006 and is still going strong. We've never experienced any major issues."

With six machines, each fitted with three cutting heads, Spey Valley maintains around 18 cutting units. Carrying out grinding work in-house provides substantial financial savings while reducing downtime.

"We have a tight maintenance budget, which means grinding in-house is a significant cost saving. Most of our grinding is completed during the winter, with touch-ups throughout the season. Any damaged cylinders can be repaired immediately rather than being sent away, which saves both time and money."

The versatility of the Jupiter Series 5 is another major advantage.

"We can grind both the cylinder and the bottom blade on one machine, saving the cost of buying another grinder and also saving valuable workshop space. We have a small team, so we have to be as efficient as possible. Being able to grind in-house keeps us up and running."

Relief grinding forms an important part of Spey Valley's preventative maintenance programme, helping to maximise cutting performance while extending the life of the cutting units.

"Relief grinding maintains a consistently sharp cutting edge throughout the season and is excellent preventative maintenance. We only relief grind once or twice a year, compared to frequent spin grinding every few weeks, which helps the blades retain their sharpness for longer."

Better Turf Starts with Sharper Cylinders

Spey Valley's greens feature a mixture of fescue, bent and Poa annua grasses, all of which benefit from a precise, clean cut.

"A sharp cylinder produces a cleaner, truer finish on the greens and improves overall surface quality and presentation. Clean cutting is essential for maintaining these grass species and also reduces the likelihood of disease development."

Service and Support That Goes Beyond the Machine

For David, investing in Hunter Grinders is about more than the equipment itself. Ongoing technical support and annual servicing have provided complete confidence year after year.

"We've had a very positive experience with David Mitchison. His ongoing support has always been available and he's consistently helped whenever required. When a new mechanic joined with limited grinding experience, David provided training and ensured he could achieve the quality of finish we demand. We can't complain at all."

David also values the annual service visit, knowing the grinder is professionally inspected and maintained before another busy season begins.

"David comes up once a year to service the machine. He replaces worn parts and keeps everything performing as it should. It gives us peace of mind that everything is ready for the year ahead."

Despite more than 20 years of service, the Hunter Grinders Jupiter Series 5 continues to deliver dependable performance.

"Our mechanic only works three days a week, so our usage is relatively low compared with many golf courses, but the reliability has remained excellent."
